Temporary Permits

A Temporary Trip Permit is offered in lieu of IRP plates to all out-of-state carriers that are not registered in Indiana but properly registered at their base state. The Temporary Indiana Trip Permit costs $15 and is valid for three days. Permits can be applied through the Indiana IRP Unit or a permitting service with an additional processing fee.

A Temporary Fuel permit is offered in lieu of IFTA licensing for travel within Indiana. The Temporary Indiana Fuel permit costs $25 and is valid for 96 hours. Motor carrier who operates vehicles in more than one IFTA member jurisdiction other than their base state must apply for IFTA credentials or fuel trip permits to travel outside of their base state.

A Hunter’s Permit is issued for vehicles that are registered in Indiana or newly-purchased vehicles to allow an owner-operator to travel at unladen weight, in search of employment. Hunter’s Permits costs $10 and valid for thirty consecutive calendar days and for only one combination of vehicles.
